About Us

WELCOME TO OUR KANGAROO ISLAND FARM

Kangaroo Island Living Honey is a family owned and operated bee farm which produces raw organic honey and honey products. Our farm consists of Shawn the apiarist (Bee keeper), farmer and father; Anthea the book keeper, product manufacturer and mother; and our 5 children.  Shawn started working with bees as a hobby in 1998 and soon realized that he wanted to do more with them and so we continued to build our hive numbers each year.  We currently manage approx 250 productive hives, and on a good year we extract up to 26 ton of Organic honey. Some of these hives can be visited on the farm.

Our Aim is to produce products of the highest standard and as natural as possible. We avoid using chemicals in all aspects of our farming practices. We love our bees and the amazing products that they create and we want to share their amazing story with everyone that visits. Our business is part of our home surroundings, and so when you arrive it is a very relaxed and casual atmosphere. Even our farm animals and pets welcome all that visit.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC HONEY

We have Organic Certification through (NASAA) National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia and we extract around 26 tons of honey a year under their stringent guidelines. All of our honey sites are approved by NASAA, keeping a 5km radius away (remembering bees only travel 2km) from any agricultural or suburban areas which may have dangerous substances or crops. Strict maintenance guidelines are adhered to and stringent records are kept of hive locations, extraction, storage and sales so all honey produced can be traced through each step of production.

KANGAROO ISLAND IS A LIGURIAN BEE SANCTUARY

In 1884 Ligurian Bees were introduced to Kangaroo Island. Thanks to the government passing legislation to proclaim Kangaroo Island a Ligurian Bee Sanctuary in 1885, we have the most pure strain of Ligurian Bees left in the world. Throughout the world there are many diseases and bee parasites putting apiaries at serious risk by destroying their hives. Due to our isolation, our bees to date are relatively disease free. There are very few disease free places left in the world, so it's very important that we protect Kangaroo Island's Pure Ligurian bees. Kangaroo Island is one of the few places left in the world where healthy queen bees can be bred and exported to countries around the world to help maintain their hives. Ligurian Bees are renowned for their gentle nature and productivity. These characteristics, and the purity of the strain, make them a valuable genetic pool for breeding purposes.

Without honey bees many food crops will fail, having a disastrous effect on our food chain. If we don't protect our bees and they become extinct the world will starve. Please help protect Kangaroo Island's Ligurian bees by observing the restriction of not bringing any honey products or items that have been in contact with honey production to the island such as: honey, pollen, beeswax, beehives, used beekeeping equipment, or other bee and beehive products, as they are restricted from entering Kangaroo Island and you will be given a hefty fine if caught doing so. PENALTIES UP TO $10,000 AS PER 1997 SA LIVESTOCK ACT. PLEASE PROTECT OUR BEES.
